The March Focus for the ‘Year of the Aging Adult in Marin

Civic Engagement

By Paula Weinberger

AARP and the United Nations World Health Organization, sponsors of Age-friendly communities, have identified eight areas or domains that impact and contribute to creating age-friendly communities:

  1. Outdoor spaces and buildings
  2. Transportation
  3. Housing
  4. Social participation
  5. Respect and social inclusion
  6. Civic participation and employment
  7. Communication and information
  8. Community health services

While distinct, each of these areas overlap. Walkable streets, good public transportation, and convenient and accessible parking make it possible for aging adults (and people of all ages) to do the things they need or want to do. Domain 6, Civic Participation and Employment (the focus for March) looks at the ways volunteering and civic participation contribute to well-being by helping aging adults stay connected to their communities. The AARP Age-friendly website offers a range of resources for both planners and individuals. Also check the Marin Commission on Aging website for programs on this topic.

Paula Weinberger serves on the Marin Villages Board of Directors and is also a member of the Novato Village Steering Committee.
